The Elucido Learning & Collaboration System

The Elucido Learning and Collaboration System (ELCS) is a solution primarily for enabling classroom to classroom interactivity & collaboration over the internet; while preserving all key aspects of traditional teaching and learning best practices.

Where it is applicable

In a single classroom or across a combination of connected classrooms and remote users with laptops, PCs and mobile devices, our solution helps Education institutes & Enterprises:

  • Enrich the teaching & learning experience by enabling efficient delivery and management of high quality interactive digital content
  • Enhance student learning and teacher productivity by providing appropriate tools and features
  • Provide expert teaching access to more students by ensuring that a single teacher can teach students in multiple locations
How it works

Consider a typical classroom scenario with a teacher and a group of students:

The teacher and students can see and hear each other. The teacher can write on the whiteboard and also request students to walk up to the board and write. The teacher and students can ask questions verbally and respond.

Students can see, hear and interact with other students in the classroom.

The teacher can split the class into groups, give them a problem and ask them to collaborate and solve it.

We have managed to successfully replicate this complex interactive environment in a single classroom across a connected network of multiple classrooms. In this connected environment, a single teacher can now teach students in geographically distributed classrooms, without compromising the quality of teaching or learning.

Moreover, our solution effectively captures and records every form of Content, Audio, Video and Assessment related interactivity and collaboration between participants across the entire network of connected classrooms and remote users.

If a student, for some reason cannot attend class, he or she can log in to the live teaching session using a PC or a laptop. Here again, all forms of interactivity and collaboration with the teacher and other students are preserved. The teacher and students in the classroom can see and hear the remote student and the remote student can see and hear everyone in the teacher’s classroom.

The teacher’s whiteboard is visible on the laptop screen of the remote student and the student can write on it using a digital pen. This activity of the remote student is visible in real-time on whiteboards across all connected classrooms and on the laptops of other remote students.

Similarly, the teacher can also teach from remote locations using a laptop and comfortably interact and collaborate with students located in multiple classrooms and with other remote students using laptops.

What this essentially means is that our solution ensures that teachers can teach from anywhere and students can learn from anywhere without any sense of disconnect or alienation. Participants can experience teaching and learning in our virtual environment as comfortably as being in a physical classroom.

Content Delivery & Management

About the Content Delivery Platform

The heart of our solution is a highly optimized Content Delivery Platform with a comprehensive built-in Content Management System (CMS). This platform can manage and deliver all types of digital content in real-time across connected classrooms, laptops, PCs and mobile devices. Teaching content can be images, animation, documents, web links, videos, presentations, etc. All popular digital media formats are supported.

Built in LMS features

 The platform has basic LMS features built-in, where the teacher can create lesson plans with digital teaching content selected from the school server, the teacher’s own PC, the internet and other accessible sources. Then schedule the lecture and invite participating classrooms and individual remote students.

Content delivery in real time

The platform can deliver distinct content to individual digital displays at various locations on campuses and buildings. Furthermore, each individual display can be zoned to display multiple content elements. Content playback at each display can be scheduled using time bound playlists that support multiple content elements.

Synchronized playback of content

In addition to real-time delivery of content, one more key feature, is the platform’s ability to enable remote, teacher controlled playback of locally stored content across all connected classrooms. For example, if a very high resolution video of say… a complex surgical procedure is to be played across 10 connected classrooms in real-time, the internet bandwidth consumption would be significant at each location.

This is how this problem can be solved. During the lesson plan creation, the teacher can upload the video in advance to each remote classroom. Later during the actual lecture, when this video is initiated in the teacher’s classroom, automatically, the same video is initiated in all connected classrooms. The teacher can pause the video and annotate on it, the same happens across all connected classrooms. The students can also annotate on the video from any of the connected classrooms. This actually simulates real time content delivery, while significantly reducing internet bandwidth consumption across the network.

Modify and add to live teaching content

One of the key features is the ability to annotate on teaching content. The teacher can annotate on say… a PowerPoint presentation or a video being shown on the interactive white board in the classroom. This is visible in real time across IWBs in connected classrooms and individual user’s laptop screens. If the teacher grants permission, students across the network can also annotate on the same content. Annotation is possible on all supported digital media formats.

Mobile based interactivity

The platform also supports mobile device based interactivity. Smart phone users can download content from displays directly on to their phones along with other relevant information and web links. For example, a new book could be advertised on a digital display located inside a cafeteria on a school campus. Standing next to the display, students can download the picture of the book on to their smart phones along with excerpts from the book and other related links.

Students can also use their smart phones to view specific information on displays located on campus. For example, check attendance records, class schedules, etc.

Tools & Features for enhancing Teacher Productivity 

Teachers are always under pressure to deliver quality teaching and improve students’ grades within a limited time frame. This is never an easy task considering the fact that all students do not learn at the same pace or understand everything that is taught during every lecture.

Test & Assessment

Our Test & Assessment module ensures that at any point during or at the end of the lecture, the teacher can display multiple choice questions on the white board and students across the network can respond to these questions instantly using their own cell phones or student response devices. This will instantly let the teacher know how many students have actually understood the topic being taught.

Using this tool, the performance of individual students, groups or the entire class can be tracked across their academic tenure.

Underperformers can be easily identified, grouped and given special attention. The ability to provide timely attention to underperforming students will ensure significant improvements in overall class performance.

Teacher to Teacher Collaboration

Teachers, like students require frequent training and support from their peers to upgrade their skills. Using our solution, there are several ways by which this can be achieved.

For example, during a teaching session, there could be a particular section in the syllabus that the teacher may not be comfortable teaching or have the knowledge to teach. At this point, during the teaching session, the HOD or another senior teacher located anywhere, can log in and start teaching (if required, with their own content). Once this is done, the teacher can again take control of the class room(s).

Teacher training is another example. Junior / trainee teachers can be physically present in classrooms where live teaching is being conducted by expert teachers from remote locations. Once the training is completed, these expert teachers can also remotely monitor trainees as they are teaching in live classrooms.

Ability to use own content

In addition to the availability of syllabus specific textbooks or third party digital content, most teachers have their own teaching material (Books, written, digital) created painstakingly over several years. Using our solution, in addition to using available third party digital teaching material, teachers can use their own content or create content during the teaching process.

Recording lesson delivery (Content & Annotation)

For example, in a classroom, the teacher can begin by writing / drawing basic concepts on the whiteboard. Then invite participating students across connected classrooms to add to it using their whiteboards. This continuous interactive content addition process between the teacher and students will result in the creation of re-usable study material that can be stored in the school / teacher knowledge repository. Content in the repository can be later accessed on demand by both teachers and students from the school premises or from their homes or from other remote locations.

Recording lesson delivery (Teacher Video, Audio, Classroom interactivity)

The entire lesson delivery with audio and video of the teacher can be effectively recorded with our Lecture Capture solution. This video / audio recording can be archived in the repository for later retrieval by the teacher or students.

Personal tutorials

“No two students learn the same way”- The need for providing individual attention. 

Providing individual attention to students in a classroom, especially in India is almost impossible because of the large number of students in each classroom. At the end of the lecture, there will be students who have not completely comprehended what was taught.

At the end of every lecture, using our Test and Assessment tool, the teacher can identify students who need additional help. After school hours, the teacher and students can simultaneously access the content that was used during the classroom session from the repository from their homes, using laptops or PCs and the teacher can teach them again in real-time, with audio & video interactivity.

Teach from anywhere

One of the many benefits of using our solution is that the teacher need not be physically present in the classroom to conduct the lecture.

If unable to attend class for some reason, the teacher can log in from home using a laptop with a camera and conduct the lecture with all interactivity, collaboration and assessment features enabled. The teacher can see and hear the students and students across all connected classrooms and remote students accessing the lecture using laptops, can see and hear the teacher.

This feature is particularly useful, if for some reason the teacher as to go on extended leave. Using our solution, the teacher need not miss a single teaching session, even when unable to attend class.

Tools & Features for enhancing Student Learning

Studies have shown that student learning improves when students actively and collectively participate in the knowledge creation process and subsequently, in the timely assessment of their learning. Several technology solutions exist that separately address individual areas of student learning. Our solution is one among very few that provides several closely integrated tools and features on one platform that effectively enhances teacher driven student learning.

Dynamic Learning Sessions

Digital, interactive education content is fast gaining popularity across K12 and Higher education institutes because of its ability to engage students better than textual and book based study material. As this medium is gaining acceptance among teachers and students, digital education content is also evolving at a rapid pace. Digital content now includes embedded video, audio, questions and answers selection, games and other forms of interactivity to convey the subject matter message effectively to students.

Students could be located in the same classroom as the teacher or across multiple classrooms or accessing the lecture from remote locations using laptops or mobile devices. Our content delivery platform is capable of effectively delivering high end, complex, interactive content across the entire connected environment of classrooms and physical devices (Laptops, PCs, Mobile Devices).

Rich digital content when delivered and managed effectively, coupled with interactivity, collaboration and frequent and instant student assessment has the potential to significantly enhance student learning.

Self Paced Learning

Studies have shown that no two students learn the same way or at the same pace. At the end of a classroom session, some students may not have comprehended the topic completely.

Our solution ensures that, they can later access the lesson content from home and go through the complete lesson delivery again, at their pace on their own, or with real-time teacher support .

Group study

While in classrooms or outside classrooms, students can collaborate with each other to solve assignments or enable peer supported learning.

Students can form study groups after school hours and collaboratively teach / learn from their respective homes using their PCs & Laptops. They will also have access to the school content repository for educational material.

Industry Exposure

In most academic syllabus, there sometimes is a disconnect between what is taught in the classroom and the knowledge that is needed in the work environment.

There are several ways to bridge this knowledge gap. One is to use appropriate, freely available or third party digital content relevant to the subject as part of the curriculum.

The second option is to as often as possible, get industry experts to deliver live lectures to the students from remote locations. This can easily be done using our solution. All the experts would need, is a laptop with a camera and an internet connection, with our software installed. They can log in to a teaching session and address the students directly with all interactivity and collaboration features enabled.

This use case is similar to an expert teacher logging in to help a junior teacher in the middle of a lesson delivery.

Never miss a class

During every student’s academic tenure, there could be occasions where the student is unable to attend class. Using our solution, the student need not be physically present in class to attend the lecture.

The student can log in to live teacher driven teaching sessions using a laptop or PC from home or even during travelling.
